Open Dental stays your chart and your system of record. This connects through Open Dental's published API, served by the eConnector that runs on your own server — no direct database access, no data migration, and no conversion of your existing records.
The integration pulls upcoming appointments and the patient and plan records attached to them through the API, so verification follows your actual schedule rather than a list someone maintains separately.
Each patient's coverage is checked electronically against the payer through a clearinghouse before the visit, and the detail the payer returns comes back with it — so the checking does not have to be done by phone or in a payer portal one patient at a time.
The result is written into the patient's chart in Open Dental along with the verification date, so the person at the front desk sees it in the chart where they already look, without a copy-paste step in between.
Setup runs through Open Dental's published API. Your office enables API access in Open Dental and issues us a customer API key, and the connection is served by Open Dental's eConnector, which runs on your own server — many offices already have it running. API access is arranged with Open Dental under their own terms. We connect only through that API and do not read or write your database directly, and there is no data migration and no conversion of your existing records. A BAA is signed before any patient data moves, and PHI is encrypted at the field level at rest on our side.
No. Open Dental stays your practice management system and your system of record; this connects to it over the published API and writes verification results into it. Coverage detail that has already been written lives in Open Dental's own records, so it stays in the chart if you stop using the integration.
In the patient's chart in Open Dental, with the verification date. It is a fair question to put to any verification vendor you look at — ask where the result lands, because the answer decides whether your team is working in the chart or in a separate portal on the morning of the appointment.
No. Claims submission runs outside the PMS and is not part of the write-back. What runs against Open Dental is eligibility verification and the coverage detail written back to the chart.
You can keep it, and turning this on does not require switching it off. eServices covers a different set of things — web forms, patient portal, reminders, texting, web scheduling — than eligibility verification, so the two can run side by side. Whether any of it overlaps with what you turn on here is something to work out with your Open Dental rep and your own numbers.
Eligibility verification reads appointments and writes coverage detail into the chart; it does not replace or switch off a built-in Open Dental function. It is worth asking of any integration you add — ask the vendor what it requires you to turn off, and check the answer with your Open Dental rep.
One connection also covers intake forms including insurance card images, payment posting, treatment plans, AR, patient search and create and update, self-scheduling, and an AI receptionist that answers calls and books into the live schedule. On Open Dental, appointment create and read are supported; appointment status updates and cancellations are not supported, so those stay manual with your team. You can turn on eligibility verification alone and add the rest later, or not at all.
If you already run Open Dental, this is not a question of moving to another PMS. Eligibility runs before the visit and the coverage detail is written into the Open Dental chart through the published API, with your chart, your data, and your workflow staying where they are.
